About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcinfo.org\/ipc-country-analysis\/details-map\/en\/c\/1157066\/?iso3=SDN\"><strong>25.6 million people<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 over half of the population of Sudan \u2013 face Crisis or worse levels of food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above). Of these, 8.5 million are experiencing emergency levels of hunger and about 755,000 people on the brink of famine. The risk of famine is high in 14 areas in Greater Darfur, Greater Kordofan, Al Jazirah states and some hotspots in Khartoum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15 million people have no access to health care, and about 80% of hospitals in conflict-affected areas are no longer functioning<\/strong>. Health personnel and medical supplies are lacking, hospitals are being damaged, looted and occupied. Since the beginning of the conflict, the World Health Organisation&#8217;s (WHO) Health Care Attacks Surveillance System (HSS) has recorded<strong> 73 attacks on health care facilities<\/strong>. These attacks have left 53 people dead and about 100 injured.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reports.unocha.org\/en\/country\/sudan?_gl=1%2ahe7egl%2a_gcl_aw%2aR0NMLjE3MTgxMTA0ODIuQ2p3S0NBanc2NS16QmhCa0Vpd0FqcnFSTURKUV9DSUZxZHF1SW1SWGFqc2F0X3JLN054NTg2WWw1SHJFNEZZLWhHQ2tuRlhpY1lHWGhSb0NnTkVRQXZEX0J3RQ..%2a_ga%2aMTY1Nzc3NTIzOS4xNzA5MDQzMTEx%2a_ga_E60ZNX2F68%2aMTcyMjAwMDM1OS41Ny4xLjE3MjIwMDAzNjkuNTAuMC4w\">According to UNFPA<\/a>, <strong>6.7 million people are at risk of gender-based violence (GBV)<\/strong> and 3.5 million women and girls in reproductive age are in need of reproductive health services. However, access to these services is hampered by poor humanitarian access to conflict areas and insufficient financial resources for women and girls, who, faced with a choice between food and health, choose the former. Cases of abduction, forced marriage, domestic violence, conflict-related sexual violence and child marriage continue to be reported, particularly in Aj Jazirah State and the Darfur region.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reports.unocha.org\/en\/country\/sudan?_gl=1%2a16ta4qf%2a_ga%2aMjEzODMzNTEwOC4xNzA0OTg5MTcy%2a_ga_E60ZNX2F68%2aMTcxMjkyNjcxMS4xMDcuMS4xNzEyOTI2NzE4LjUzLjAuMA..\">14 million children<\/a> are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance, 19 million are out of school and 4 million are displaced, shaping the world&#8217;s largest child displacement crisis. For the <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/sudan\/sudan-conflict-24-million-children-exposed-year-brutality-and-rights-violations-un-committee-says\">UN Committee on the Rights of the Child<\/a>, there is a <b><strong>risk of a generational catastrophe for 24 million children in Sudan<\/strong><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Humanitarian access to the country remains limited, further complicating the situation. In late February, the de facto Sudanese authorities withdrew their consent to the provision of cross-border humanitarian assistance from Chad to Sudan. The border with Chad was the only access route available to bring humanitarian aid to the regions of Darfur, the area of the country with the highest levels of humanitarian needs and where the ongoing food crisis could soon reach the famine stage. After a two-month closure, cross-border humanitarian aid from Chad to Sudan is allowed through a single access point.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=&#8221;0&#8243; back_color=&#8221;color-gyho&#8221; overlay_alpha=&#8221;50&#8243; gutter_size=&#8221;3&#8243; column_width_percent=&#8221;100&#8243; shift_y=&#8221;0&#8243; z_index=&#8221;0&#8243; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;128080&#8243; back_color_type=&#8221;uncode-palette&#8221;][vc_column column_width_percent=&#8221;100&#8243; gutter_size=&#8221;3&#8243; overlay_alpha=&#8221;50&#8243; shift_x=&#8221;0&#8243; shift_y=&#8221;0&#8243; shift_y_down=&#8221;0&#8243; z_index=&#8221;0&#8243; medium_width=&#8221;0&#8243; mobile_width=&#8221;0&#8243; css_animation=&#8221;right-t-left&#8221; animation_speed=&#8221;600&#8243; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;777476&#8243;][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;172185&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>WORLD&#8217;S WORST DISPLACEMENT CRISIS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/dtm.iom.int\/reports\/dtm-sudan-mobility-update-04\">10.7 million<\/a> people are currently internally displaced in Sudan<\/strong>, 7.9 million since the outbreak of the current conflict in Sudan. More than half of the displaced are women and almost 55% are children under the age of 18. For more than a year, these people have been suffering separation, human rights violations, trauma, violence and lack of access to basic services. For IOM, <strong>Sudan is facing the largest displacement crisis globally<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Over <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.unocha.org\/en\/country\/sudan?_gl=1%2ahe7egl%2a_gcl_aw%2aR0NMLjE3MTgxMTA0ODIuQ2p3S0NBanc2NS16QmhCa0Vpd0FqcnFSTURKUV9DSUZxZHF1SW1SWGFqc2F0X3JLN054NTg2WWw1SHJFNEZZLWhHQ2tuRlhpY1lHWGhSb0NnTkVRQXZEX0J3RQ..%2a_ga%2aMTY1Nzc3NTIzOS4xNzA5MDQzMTEx%2a_ga_E60ZNX2F68%2aMTcyMjAwMDM1OS41Ny4xLjE3MjIwMDAzNjkuNTAuMC4w\">2.1 million people<\/a> have crossed borders seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. People have fled in large numbers to Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, as well as Ethiopia, the Central African Republic (CAR), and Libya. These countries are facing <strong>escalating refugee crises<\/strong> and the threat of conflict in Sudan spilling across their borders &#8211; particularly with Chad and South Sudan &#8211; creating a regional crisis with catastrophic humanitarian needs.<\/p>\n<p>Access to food is the most pressing need among displaced people, as over 97% of displaced people across Sudan have been housed in locations with high levels of food insecurity. <strong>It is estimated that 89% of displaced households are unable to meet their daily nutritional needs<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image media=&#8221;105234&#8243; media_width_percent=&#8221;100&#8243; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;144458&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=&#8221;0&#8243; back_color=&#8221;color-191468&#8243; overlay_alpha=&#8221;50&#8243; gutter_size=&#8221;3&#8243; column_width_percent=&#8221;100&#8243; shift_y=&#8221;0&#8243; z_index=&#8221;0&#8243; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;110804&#8243; back_color_type=&#8221;uncode-palette&#8221;][vc_column][vc_empty_space empty_h=&#8221;1&#8243;][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;166533&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>INTERSOS INTERVENTION IN NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Chad<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"et_pb_section et_pb_section_3 et_section_regular\">\n<div class=\" et_pb_row et_pb_row_1\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et_pb_column_1 et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et-last-child\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text et_pb_module et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_text_1\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p><strong>Chad<\/strong>, where we have been operating since 2016, has been experiencing a major humanitarian crisis for years with nearly a third of the population-<a href=\"https:\/\/humanitarianaction.info\/plan\/1192\">5.8 million people<\/a>-in need of humanitarian assistance. The country is challenged by armed conflict, internal displacement and entrenched food insecurity, all exacerbated by the consequences of climate change. In addition, even before April 2023, there were <strong>600,000 refugees<\/strong> in the country, including 400,000 Sudanese, who have been living in protracted displacement in eastern Chad for about 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>After the start of the last conflict in Sudan, Chad has seen the largest number of Sudanese refugees crossing its border. As of June more than <strong>781,000 refugees and returnees<\/strong> have entered the country and are now facing increasing challenges.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the refugee crisis, INTERSOS is providing <strong>emergency shelter<\/strong> and <strong>protection assistance<\/strong> along the eastern border. Together with the UNHCR, <strong>we have built a refugee camp in Zabout<\/strong>, on the border with Sudan, which can accommodate <strong>about 60,000 refugees<\/strong>, and we are also building new emergency shelters in <strong>Kerfi camp<\/strong>, in partnership with the UNHCR.<\/p>\n<p>We also carry out essential protection activities in Zabout and Daguessa camps: we have set up 12 safe spaces for women and children, support people in family reunification processes, and directly manage child protection and gender-based violence cases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;157209&#8243;]<iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VoWdcQxvKw0?si=E7tuVfgs8hmsa9Yk\" width=\"1000\" height=\"560\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;974574&#8243;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_section et_pb_section_3 et_section_regular\">\n<div class=\" et_pb_row et_pb_row_1\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et_pb_column_1 et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et-last-child\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text et_pb_module et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_text_1\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h3><strong>South Sudan<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The situation is challenging in <strong>South Sudan<\/strong> as well, a country experiencing a chronic humanitarian crisis due to decades of civil war, poverty, violence, economic underdevelopment, flooding, poor infrastructure, climate change and food insecurity. Even before April 2023, the country was already home to about <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/chad\/sudan-emergency-regional-refugee-response-plan-january-december-2024\">300,000 refugees<\/a>, almost all from Sudan. Throughout 2023, South Sudan continued to receive thousands of refugees and returnees from Sudan. In 2024, including refugees, it is estimated that <strong>9 million people in South Sudan <\/strong>&#8211; 70% of the total population &#8211; currently <strong>require humanitarian assistance<\/strong> and <strong>7.1 million people are acutely food insecure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To date, <strong>more than <a href=\"https:\/\/data.unhcr.org\/en\/situations\/sudansituation\">700,000 people<\/a> have sought shelter from the Sudanese conflict in South Sudan<\/strong>. Among these, more than 550,000 are former South Sudanese refugees returning to their country of origin, while nearly 150.000 are Sudanese refugees.<\/p>\n<p>Almost all arrivals from Sudan transit through Upper Nile State. Here, in <strong>Malakal<\/strong>, between June 2023 and January 2024, we provided essential child protection and protection services at <strong>Bulukat Transit Camp<\/strong>, including family tracing and reunification for unaccompanied children at two child-friendly spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Since June 2024, INTERSOS has been providing assistance in the <strong>Renk border area<\/strong>, specifically in\u00a0two transit centres and the <strong>Joda border point<\/strong>. We offer protection services, such as protection risk monitoring, awareness raising, and managing information desks in the transit camps, as well as the distribution of non-food items, shelter assistance, and cash provisions to the vulnerable returnees and refugees in these areas. Additionally, INTERSOS conducts regular monitoring outside of transit camps to identify the most vulnerable South Sudanese returnee families and provide in-kind assistance.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Jongley<\/strong> state, on the other hand, we carry out border monitoring, support for victims of gender-based violence, psychosocial support and distributions, targeting <strong>18,030 returnees from Sudan and Ethiopia and internally displaced persons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;348021&#8243;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_section et_pb_section_3 et_section_regular\">\n<div class=\" et_pb_row et_pb_row_1\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et_pb_column_1 et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et-last-child\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text et_pb_module et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_text_1\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h3><strong>Central African Republic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the <strong>Central African Republic<\/strong> to date, <strong>some 25,000 refugees and more than 6,000 returnees<\/strong> have arrived <a href=\"https:\/\/data.unhcr.org\/en\/situations\/sudansituation\">from Sudan<\/a>. The country was already in a complex humanitarian situation resulting from more than a decade of internal conflict and flooding due to climate change that continues to cause displacement. Half the population suffers from food insecurity, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.unocha.org\/en\/country\/car\/?_gl=1%2a1b2esim%2a_ga%2aMjEzODMzNTEwOC4xNzA0OTg5MTcy%2a_ga_E60ZNX2F68%2aMTcwOTIxNTUwMi4zNy4xLjE3MDkyMTU3OTMuMzkuMC4w\">500,000<\/a> Central Africans are internally displaced, and another <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.unocha.org\/en\/country\/car\/?_gl=1%2a1b2esim%2a_ga%2aMjEzODMzNTEwOC4xNzA0OTg5MTcy%2a_ga_E60ZNX2F68%2aMTcwOTIxNTUwMi4zNy4xLjE3MDkyMTU3OTMuMzkuMC4w\">750,000<\/a> are refugees in neighboring countries, including Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2014 INTERSOS has been working in the country to bring aid to the Central African population and has recently expanded its efforts to support the refugee population from Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>Vakanga prefecture<\/strong> INTERSOS is operating with a specific focus on supporting and <strong>delivering assistance to children facing significant protection risks<\/strong>, including family separation, child abuse, sexual and gender-based violence, and recruitment by armed groups. Family separation has affected a large number of Sudanese refugee children, many of whom are unaccompanied and separated from their families.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;144770&#8243;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_section et_pb_section_3 et_section_regular\">\n<div class=\" et_pb_row et_pb_row_1\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et_pb_column_1 et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et-last-child\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text et_pb_module et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_text_1\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h3><strong>Libya<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Libya has received over <strong>10,000 individuals<\/strong>, both Sudanese and non-Sudanese, between April 2023 and June 2024. Most Sudanese refugees arrive in Alkufra, then move towards Ajdabiya and Sabha, ultimately aiming for Tripoli to register with UNHCR and access essential services. Outside Tripoli, accessing these services is challenging, increasing protection risks.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Sabha<\/strong>,<strong> Ajdabiya<\/strong>, and <strong>Tripoli<\/strong>, INTERSOS has been supporting Sudanese refugee communities and other groups through protection services such as integrated <strong>case management<\/strong>, <strong>psychosocial support<\/strong>, and <strong>legal assistance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, INTERSOS provides <strong>non-formal education<\/strong>, distributes <strong>non-food items and kits<\/strong> to children, and conducts <strong>outreach activities<\/strong> to newly arrived Sudanese refugees in unofficial settlements.<\/p>\n<p>In<strong> Ajdabiya<\/strong>, a transit city, INTERSOS operates a community centre with support from UNICEF and the EU. This centre provides critical support amidst a limited INGO and UN presence and a challenging security context.
