On March 15, 2011, a protracted war began in Syria that pushed the country to its breaking point, forcing millions to flee their cities and cross national borders. Following the fall of the regime in December 2024, however, the needs of the population remain immense and living conditions stay extremely precarious.<\/p>\n
While the change in government marked an unprecedented moment of transformation, the reality on the ground for millions of Syrians remains defined by systemic instability, economic collapse, and a daily struggle for survival.<\/p>\n
It is true that 2025 saw a significant wave of returns\u2014over 1.2 million internally displaced persons and half a million refugees\u2014but these individuals often returned to find nothing. Most vital infrastructure (hospitals, schools, and water networks) was either leveled during the conflict or rendered unusable. The figures remain staggering: it is estimated that 16.7 million people in Syria need humanitarian assistance\u2014nearly 70% of the population.<\/b><\/p>\n
Compounding this, since March 2, the consequences of the conflict between the U.S.\/Israel and Iran have affected the entire Middle East. This crisis is triggering a wave of Syrian refugees returning from Lebanon, which is under daily Israeli attack.<\/p>\n
As of March 10, humanitarian agencies recorded approximately 85,000\u201390,000 people<\/b> entering Syria through major border crossings, including Jdeidet Yabous and Jousieh. This influx consists of two distinct groups:<\/p>\n Syrian Returnees (93%):<\/b> Thousands of families who had lived in Lebanon for over a decade are now fleeing back to Syria. This decision is driven not by favorable conditions on the ground, but by the necessity of survival, as their homes in Lebanon have been hit by Israeli airstrikes and military operations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Lebanese Citizens (7%):<\/b> For the first time in years, a significant number of Lebanese families are seeking temporary refuge in Syria or transiting toward other regional destinations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n “Returning to Syria brings the hope of rebuilding, but also the risk of new local conflicts over property rights, a severe lack of basic services, and the danger of further displacement,” explains Marianne El Kallassy, INTERSOS Head of Mission in Syria.<\/b> “Rebuilding a life in Syria is extremely difficult. We must start by ensuring a safe and dignified return for the displaced, while simultaneously addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable.”<\/p>\n INTERSOS has been active in Syria for over five years, continuing to provide life-saving assistance and protection to the most vulnerable communities, with a focus on those returning to destroyed homes in areas still plagued by insecurity.<\/p>\n Our teams are active in the governorates of Hama, Idlib, and Rural Damascus<\/b>, providing:<\/p>\n Protection Services:<\/b> Case management for gender-based violence and child protection, legal assistance for civil and housing rights, and explosive ordnance risk education.
