On February 26th INTERSOS participates to the High-Level Pledging Event convened by the United Nations and the Governments of Sweden and Switzerland in Geneva to support the humanitarian response in Yemen.<\/p>\n
An opportunity to raise awareness on the condition of Yemeni people, support the life-saving work of INGOs operating in the country and increase funding to the UN appeal.<\/p>\n
Yemen is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today. Out of 30 million Yemenis, 24 million people need aid to survive. People are hungrier, sicker and worse off than a year ago and the numbers of people in need are growing every day.<\/p>\n
Restrictions on imports, food, medicines and fuel imports, closure of ports, roads and airports have pushed Yemenis into a catastrophic humanitarian situation. Tactics used in this war are starving the civilian population.<\/p>\n
Ten million people are one step away from famine. Millions of people in the worst affected areas do not know when they will eat their next meal. More and more families are selling off their possessions and getting into debt to buy food.<\/p>\n
There is nowhere safe in Yemen, air strikes, shelling and ground fighting continue to kill civilians every day, people are being killed or injured in their own homes, in the market or in cars and buses.<\/p>\n
War is destroying Yemen\u2019s infrastructure, destroying houses, water tanks, schools and hospitals and will cost billions of dollars to repair. Yemen\u2019s economy is collapsing. High inflation, shortage of foreign exchange, has led to losses to the GDP of close to $50 billion. Teachers, health workers and civil servants in the North haven\u2019t been paid for years. 600,000 jobs have been lost.<\/p>\n
Since the outbreak of the conflict in March 2015, INTERSOS is one of the few international organizations that have not abandoned the country, continuing to provide medical and food assistance, support and organize child friendly spaces, psychological care and protection for the most vulnerable women and children and for the victims of abuse and violence, and support for families at risk.<\/p>\n
INTERSOS intervenes both in the north and south of the country, bringing aid to the most remote and hard-to-reach locations in the Governorates of Sana\u2019a, Aden, Hadramout, Taiz, Ibb, Hajja, Mahweet and Lahj.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
